If you have a septic tank, no doubt you take great care to keep it functioning smoothly, including Septic Systems routine professional maintenance.
And yet perhaps you’re still not certain if toilet paper advertised as “Septic Safe!” really is just that. And who wouldn’t be skeptical after being told that there’s such a thing as “flushable wipes,” a claim that is misleading at best.
No matter what type of toilet paper you’re using, it sinks to the bottom of your septic tank and contributes to the layer of “sludge” that builds up over time. Natural bacteria will decompose some of the sludge, but the accumulation is the reason you need to have your septic tank pumped at regular intervals.
Logic suggests that it’s best to use toilet paper that quickly dissolves into small particles, but that’s not the only factor to consider before making your selection.
Biodegradable Toilet Paper
All toilet paper will eventually break down inside your septic tank, but biodegradable types require less water and dissolve much faster. On the “not-so-great” side, biodegradable brands aren’t as soft and thick as others and can be more costly.
Recycled Toilet Paper
Recycled toilet paper contains fewer chemicals, like bleach, that can disrupt the natural bacterial balance in your septic tank. The fibers in recycled paper are short and break apart easily, so it dissolves more quickly in water.
Septic-Safe Toilet Paper
There are numerous types of toilet paper available which are marked “septic-safe,” but not all such claims are true. To play it safe, look for septic safe brands that are thus certified by the National Sanitation Foundation, a nonprofit organization that tests products related to health and the environment. That information can be found on the package.
