Here’s the theory: heating systems provide equal amounts of heat throughout your home. Is that how things are inside your home? If not, you may either be using or thinking about acquiring a space heater.
While the right model can be the right solution for rooms that you could hang meat in, space heaters also pose certain safety risks. They’re easily overcome, but only if you first know what could go wrong.
Follow these safety tips for an even warmer and more comfortable winter indoors.
- Unless it carries the UL (Underwriters Laboratory) or comparable seal of approval – keep looking.
- You want just the right size heater – too big or too small just won’t do. If it’s too big, you’re going to pay too much for the added heat. If it’s too small, it’s going to run longer, thus increasing safety risks.
- Place your space heater in a space of its own, and away from flammable materials like bedding, window treatments, stray clothing, and more.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance. When it comes to your kids, that includes when the space heater is off. Better to unplug it when it’s not in use.
- Space heaters should be placed on the floor only – not chairs, desks, tabletops, or cardboard boxes.
- Never plug a space heater into an extension cord.
- As your space heater ages, there’s a greater likelihood that the electrical cord might be frayed or cracked. Check it thoroughly once the new heating season gets underway.
