How to Prevent Blocked Drains

Everyone knows you’re not supposed to pour FOG (fats, oils, and grease) down the drain, right?

Fatty, oily, greasy foods are no picnic for our bodies, either. But at least the human body  Prevent Blocked Drains can break down some of them. Sewers aren’t nearly as good at it. Instead, the FOG elements stick to pipes and build on each other, ever narrowing the amount of space for water to squeeze by. At first, you’ll notice a slow-moving drain. Ignore the symptom, and eventually you’ll be stuck with a blocked drain. Not to mention a drain cleaning repair bill.

FOG to Keep Out of Your Drains

Just to be clear on what we’re talking about, here’s a hit list of FOG offenders:

How to Prevent Blocked Drains

Fats (solid at room temperature)

  • Butter, shortening, & margarine
  • Peanut butter
  • Meat trimming
  • Uncooked poultry skin
  • Dairy products, including cheese, milk & sour cream

Oils (liquid at room temperature)

  • Vegetable oil
  • Canola oil
  • Olive oil
  • Corn oil
  • Salad dressings

Grease (turns to liquid during cooking, but solidifies when cooled)

  • Gravy
  • Mayonnaise
  • Melted meat fat
  • Bacon and sausage
  • Boiled poultry skin

How to Lift the FOG Problem

For happy, healthy sink drains, and fewer blocked drain problems, we recommend the following:

  • Dispose of fats in your trash
  • Pour oils and grease into a container with a lid, then dispose of it with the rest of your trash
  • Reduce the amount of FOG to dispose of by first dry wiping your dishes to get rid of small scraps of food and traces of oils and grease.

And yet, no matter how careful you might be, sooner or later you’re bound to incur a clogged drain problem, one you can’t resolve on your own. That’s when it’s time to contact Eagle Service Company, your complete sewer and drain cleaning resource. We also offer drain repair and replacement services.
