How to Keep Your Outdoor Pool Swim Ready

Here in Greater Birmingham, we’re fortunate to live in a climate where we get to use our outdoor pools more months of the year than in other parts of the country.  That’s great news when it comes to personal enjoyment, but maybe not the best news if you find pool maintenance a tedious chore.

Well, like all chores, the more you know, the less tedious it becomes – hence the purpose of this blog. And that is to give you some proven-effective pool maintenance tips that will help make your job easier and keep your pool swim ready night and day.

Up-Front Clean-Up.

After hibernating for several months, a pool needs a little TLC to be ready for the season. Clear away leaves, branches, and other debris and run the filter prior to treating the water with chemicals.

Balance.

Follow your pool kit’s instructions for achieving the perfect pH, calcium, and alkalinity balance. Doing so will keep your water crystal clear, the filter clog-free and all while preventing skin and eye irritation.

Chlorine.

You have a few options when it comes to chlorinating the water to keep it bacteria-free. Do some research to figure out whether tabs, liquid, a separate algaecide – or an all-in-one product – are right for you.

Shock It.

Most pool professionals recommend shocking a pool with 3 to 5 times the normal amount of chlorine twice a month, or more frequently if your pool is used more than an average amount of time.

Algaecide.

Wind and rain can sweep plant life into your pool where it can quickly take up residence. A weekly or bi-weekly treatment can keep the water sparkling clean.

Prevention.

If rain or heavy winds are in the forecast, cover your pool to prevent debris from falling in and algae from growing. Also, rinse the pool deck often, making sure to direct the hose away from the pool so that dirt and debris aren’t forced into the water.

One of the great joys you derive as a pool owner is the instant sensation of feeling cool and refreshed – pretty much the same feeling you get walking into your air conditioned home.
