Whether or not you join the masses in search of the best deals on Black Friday, you at least are very Plumbers familiar with the term and the occasion it signifies.
Well, there’s a quite different Black Friday event though it occurs on exactly the same day – the day after Thanksgiving. You see, we plumbers have our own Black Friday and have so labeled it because it’s our busiest drain cleaning day of the year.
Every year, no matter how careful people try to be, we receive scores of calls and emails from customers looking to unclog a drain, sink, or toilet. They need us, you see, because no amount of DIY activity is making a difference.
So, from our house to yours, here’s how to keep the plumber away on Black Friday – at least to come and clear a holy mess of a clogged drain.
- Pour all leftover fat, oil, and grease (FOG) into a disposable container.
- Thoroughly wipe your plates clean and dispose of what’s left in your trash bag or pail before rinsing and washing them – same goes for pots and pans.
- Don’t overload your disposal. It’s better to grind up lesser amounts of food at a time.
- Be careful what you place in your disposal, as it’s not built to grind up turkey bones, fibrous foods like lettuce and green beans, coffee grinds, pasta, or rice.
- If you or a guest pours grease down the drain, thoroughly rinse it for at least 60 seconds with cold water to help prevent it from congealing and sticking to the insides of your pipes.
- Be careful not to grind too many potato peels as the starches can form a thick paste that can cause your blades to stick.
